Many music producers pick up sound design when they feel like they need to take their compositions to the next level. By using your own carefully crafted sounds, you may succeed in making songs that will stand out because they bear your distinctive signature. It takes a lot of work to get there, and it’s also important that you use the right set of tools for this very purpose.
Choosing a synthesizer is a very important part of the process and one that you should give at least a bit of thought. So today we’re going to take a look at a versatile instrument called Blade.
Great synth for playing with harmonics
Many of the amazing instruments designed by Rob Papen have a specific musical purpose, and Blade is no different. This synth allows you to focus on the harmonic content of a waveform and adjust it according to your taste and needs. It’s safe to say that if you don’t know too much about frequencies, fundamentals, and harmonics, then this isn’t really a synth that you should pick up until you study a bit more about sound and music theory.
Not that the instrument itself is hard to use; the sounds are generated by the “harmolator”, a complex oscillator that allows you to adjust a wide variety of parameters such as range, timbre, ripple width, or harmonics volume. At the core of the instrument is an XY pad that is typical for many Rob Papen instruments, and allows you to approach modulation in a playful way.
Other modules
You can further modulate the sound with the help of the synth’s amp, LFO, and envelope, while the velocity section is there to add a more “human input” to your music. You get a filter and a special section for distortion, but you can add two additional effects, and use the arpeggiator to add rhythm to your soundscapes. Most importantly, the Spec section allows you to have a good look at the waveform and its harmonics.
Blade is great for creating pads, basslines, unusual leads, and unique sound effects, among many other things. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an easy-to-use synth for sound design.

Blade 2

Blade 2 is a widely used low cost modular synthesizer that will enable you to create your own sounds, no matter if you are a seasoned musician or just starting out.

It’s not only a sound module but also a highly versatile synthesizer, offering many great functions for the creation of highly flexible patches.

Blade 2 comes with a powerful oscillator (MSO) that makes it possible to generate great sounds.

The sound engine has three LFO’s, for pitch, pulse width modulation (PWM) and glide. Each LFO can be modulated by an independent envelope.

There is a special section for filters where you can use an Analog filter with Resonance or Bandpass-type, as well as a Low-Pass, High-Pass and Band-Pass, among many others.

There is a special section for distortion. Blade 2 offers two types of distortion: Analog (which works very well, I must say) and overdrive. With the latter you can control the level of overdrive, which offers additional advantages. You can also add effects like reverb, delay and a chorus, making Blade 2 more flexible than most synths in its price range.

The arpeggiator offers 32 MIDI note events. You can assign each note to a control parameter or channel, making it very easy to play and compose complex sequences.

Blade 2 can act as a MIDI/CV converter for any CV-controlled module.

The sequencer includes 16 buttons for playing notes on up to 16 notes, with 16 separate tracks. The sound engine can provide the pitch of the selected track, the one-shot message and the note-off status.

This means that all possible combinations of pitch, one-shot message and note-off status can be created. You can also select which module to play from, which is great to add some variation to the patch.

There is a volume fader for the complete instrument and, in addition, there are separate volume faders for each track, the envelopes, the effects and the modulators.

This means that you can use the faders to perform an edit on each of the 5 sections individually. The power of this feature is that the faders can also be used to add or remove feedback, chorus, delay and reverb.

One thing I’ve liked is that the sound engine offers some very nice features. I like to use it to get started

Digital signal processing is the manipulation of information that is represented by discrete samples of a waveform such as an audio signal. The sampling process defines the minimum amount of time required for the signal to change value; that is, the sample frequency. Sampling rate is the frequency with which new data is produced for a given analog signal.

The sound produced by a DSP is determined by the type and characteristics of the algorithm used. The analog to digital converter is the device that performs the sampling of the waveform, and the DSP is the device that processes this digital information. The DSP is usually contained in a PC, but may also be contained in a dedicated sound card, in which case it is called a sound card. In many cases, the DSP controls the synthesis of sound in other devices, such as a guitar amp or PA system.

Digital signal processing (DSP) is used to manipulate sound in a wide variety of ways. The operations often involve adding and subtracting harmonics, adjusting the waveform to produce amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM), adding echo to an audio signal, and applying distortion and filtering to audio signals. These effects are used in the electronic musical instrument and have become the basis of musical effects such as pitch shifting and phase distortion, which are commonly used in dance music and hip-hop.

How It Works

DSP allows manipulation of digital data. Sound is a time-varying waveform, and a series of samples taken of this waveform, in a process known as sampling, can produce a digital version of the original sound that is useful in many applications. When sound is recorded from the environment, it is sampled at some rate. If the rate is low, there will be a delay between the sound recorded and its digital representation. This delay is called latency. If the rate is high, a lot of data will be generated, which will make storing the sound for later use difficult, unless enough memory is available.

The term DSP is sometimes used to refer to the signal processing, which is just the first step in producing a sound. There may be further mixing and effects processing applied to the sound before it is
